FOCUS: Center for Individual and Family Therapy (CIFT)

It’s normal that people and families go through changes, difficulties, or often both. Going to a therapist doesn’t necessarily mean you have a mental illness or a serious aliment. The Center for Individual and Family Therapy (CIFT) is here to help.

Josephine Sheehy has served the Downriver community as a therapist for over 20 years, and since 2005 she has been the Executive Director of the Center. The CIFT has been located in the City of Taylor since 2000. The CIFT is recognized and accredited by CARF, an international, not-for-profit organization that holds human services providers to the highest standards. Based on the surveyors’ review of the site for quality of service, CARF accreditation is awarded for one to three years.

A Look Inside...

The Center’s therapists have an average of over ten years post-graduate experience as practicing therapists. They consistently attend continuing education conferences to keep current with theories and therapy techniques. The Medical Director for the Center is Dr. H. Singh who specializes in adult and geriatric psychiatry. Dr. M. Aman, MD is the staff psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. The Center’s secretarial staff is experienced, knowledgeable, efficient and caring to clients and to the Center’s professional staff.

“I never dreamed I would be the Executive Director of the Center,” said Sheehy, “but as time goes on I continue to do my best. The Center has grown since I became Executive Director and I am proud of that.” She continued, “I can say that my personal goal of helping others and making the Center a part of the community is being fulfilled." As Executive Director, Sheehy devotes most of her time managing the clinic, although she does schedule a limited number of therapy clients.

The Service

The impact that environment has on a client is important. They are going through stressful times in their lives and to come to a warm, comfortable environment is very important. It tells clients, whether families or individuals, that they are valued, and this puts people at ease. This environment also impacts the Center staff.

Although the Center does not offer babysitting, there is a safe area with some toys and a desk where older children can stay while waiting for their parents.

Sheehy gets a lot of personal satisfaction from providing a great counseling service for the community. She is an active member of Taylor Schools Health and participates in events like the Family Enrichment Health Fair.

The Center’s mission is to provide professional outpatient mental health services to the Downriver and Western Wayne County communities. The Center strives to enhance the psychological and social functioning of adults, adolescents and children of both sexes by improving their self esteem and coping skills. The Center places particular emphasis on empowering families, directing its efforts at strengthening them through education and psychotherapeutic interventions.
