FOCUS: Nanny's Nursery & Daycare Center

Sheryl Westerdale
Sheryl Westerdale, founder of Nanny's Nursery School, follows her childhood dream that still thrives over 20 years.“As a child I visited a relative's Nursery School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I was very impressed with the miniature furniture and children. I decided then that I wanted to own a nursery school. After graduation from high school I entered Eastern Michigan University to study Early Childhood Education. After completing my studies I opened Nanny's.
The name, "Nanny" comes from what I called my grandmother. Nannies are portrayed as very loving towards children with a magical quality as in Mary Poppins. We are very proud of our staff or nannies, which have that image. I hope to give the children at Nanny's that magical childhood they deserve by having loving people care for them.

A little history
In the summer of 1985 we broke ground to build the facility in Taylor. The new center would have a license capacity of ninety children. I was concerned about getting enough children to fill the center. By the spring of 1986 we were full and had to begin another waiting list. The building project was exciting. The property was purchased from the Taylor School District. My father was the architect and builder. My grandfather was the building foreman. My mother and I worked very hard on the design and decorating. We were very adamant about creating a warm and home like atmosphere. We did not want an institutional looking building. We wanted windows that the children could look out. Our purpose was to create a safe learning environment in which the children would feel at home. On December 11, 1985 Nanny's on Pardee opened for business.

Our Philosophy
We feel that all children at Nanny’s are special.  Each child is unique.  Nanny’s seeks to create an atmosphere that is loving and caring, in which your child will feel at home.  We provide a stimulating learning environment, where the children can learn and grow at their own pace.  Children will leave Nanny’s with a positive attitude towards learning and school.

Our Staff
Nanny’s staff members are carefully screened, selected and trained in our early childhood education.  The head teachers in our preschool programs hold either an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.  Our assistant teachers in our preschool program are either college students in Early Childhood Education or a related field.  We also hire staff members who have had experience working with children either their own or children in the community.  We are continually developing our staff by monthly staff meetings, the attendance of seminars and workshops held by universities and professional organizations.  Nanny’s is a member of the N.A.E.Y.C. (National Association of Childcare Professionals) and the National Organization of Childcare Centers.  We also serve the community as a laboratory setting for college students in the area.
